How nice it is when two guests from previous episodes of the Work Professor decide to write a book together. Caroline Koetsenruiter has been a guest twice before and Hans van der Loo once. Together they wrote the book "Toxic Hassle in the Workplace - From Aggressive Behavior to Social Safety. We are champions of aggression in the workplace, a title we should not be proud of. Have I become the matchmaker for your book? Or did you bump into each other through another avenue?

Caroline Koetsenruijter studied law in Leiden and negotiation and mediation in Boston. After her studies, she worked as a researcher for Leiden University. After this, she worked as a workplace mediator at the Ministry of Justice and Security. She then became a researcher at the Netherlands Mediation Institute.

Caroline was active as a mediator for 15 years and as of 2007 she is director of Institute KCB. Caroline and her team train with over 175 unique clients around aggression prevention, conflict management and mediation.

Hans van der Loo focuses on self-motivation and psychological safety in teams. He is a researcher, facilitator and author of several bestselling books, including the 2020 titles "Psychological Safety: How to Form Fearless Teams" and "Field Guide to Psychological Safety: Forms of Work, Examples and Tools to Perform Fearlessly Together.

His latest book, "Teaming: the new reality of collaboration," he co-wrote with Patrick Davidson. Their earlier book about Elon Musk - Musk Mania - was published in 8 languages in more than 30 countries.

Toxic fuss

We start at the beginning. What is toxic behavior? Hans explains that it is about lasting patterns of aggressive behavior. "It's really about lasting patterns and not just someone going out of their way once."

It's fine to be cranky once, but it's about repeated behavior that has the effect of making people feel unsafe and anxious. And that there are all kinds of destructive effects. That people get upset and really sick about it, stressed out and sometimes they end up sitting at home.

In the book, Hans and Caroline take a closer look at 5 characteristics. They deal with the following familiar list: harassment, threats, discrimination, physical violence and corruption.

Wondering how to recognize the characteristics of toxic hassles? Then how to solve, but preferably prevent it? Then listen to the latest episode of the Work Professor podcast.
