Today in the Work Professor, we speak with Hette Mollema, Vice President Benelux at Workday. Workday is a cloud software provider for HR and finance.
Workday hired a research firm to research the use of AI and what the main barriers and concerns are when deploying AI within organizations. According to the report, "AI IQ: Insights on Artificial Intelligence in the Enterprise," these are the top 3 challenges:
- Reliable data
- Finding the right use case
- Skills in the organization to properly deploy AI
Summary
It is interesting to note the pressure on leadership in organizations when it comes to having an AI strategy. "Last year was also really the year of AI. Having a strategy is lacking. The feeling of 'others have it,' fear of missing out. I think a lot of managers are not late, but it's time to form an AI strategy." There are some big challenges in creating the right strategy. Consider the use of data, what use case can you use and how do you deal with the lack of skills in the organization.
There are few training courses out there on how to teach your leadership team to develop skills to deploy AI. It's more a matter of learning on the job, according to Hette. The study found that companies that have experience with it that see use cases very quickly. They are often small changes, but take a call center. A summary has to be written of every call. This easily takes 20 minutes. Nobody feels like doing this. But let an AI tool do this and it's done in no time and you no longer have to pick up this tedious chore. Win-win!
Takeaways
- To overcome the lack of data and facilitate the application of AI, it is essential to collect data from reliable sources. Ensure that the data collected is reliable by validating and verifying it. Avoid data coming from different sources to avoid fragmentation and multiple interpretations. Only in this way can a solid foundation of reliable data be created for effective use of artificial intelligence.
- To break through resistance and get started with AI, it is helpful to start with small examples. For example, by illustrating the use of data and how it improves productivity or makes work more enjoyable. Understandably, there may be concerns about unwanted actions by computers. Talking about these concerns and open communication can help ease fears and create a better understanding of the benefits AI can provide.
