We are in the middle of an extremely fast-changing world, and we don't like it. People are not made to change, and yet we expect great adaptability, especially in the workplace.
Marcia Goddard, a PhD in social neuroscience, did extensive research on the golden formula for the workplace. Her goal is actually the same as that of our podcast namely, integrate science into business.
Marcia's background is very diverse. For example, she has done research on autism, on the growth mindset, she has won the Bullseye Award, for the most innovative use of technology, in London and has worked for Young Capital, Tony Chocolonely, at the university and at a serious gaming company. A true jack-of-all-trades.
The golden formula
Because of Marcia's many experiences, she is well able to look at all sides in the workplace. For example, she herself says she can come up with a "holistic" approach. "I have the science, which means I understand the theory, but I also have the practical experience because I have worked in the corporate world. I also had an HR Leadership role at Tony's. Which means I also have knowledge and experience of the processes within HR.
Holistic sounds woolly, but it means you start looking at all the different elements. What are the things we already know from science, what does practice say and how can we bring that together and get the best insights from that to get to a good result. In other words, the golden formula.
Formula 1
When Marcia worked at Young Capital, she saw with her clients that there were two things that kept coming back. Namely continuous change and being under high pressure. Her science brain started thinking 'what can I do and how can I get insight on how best to cope with that'.
Eventually she started research in the Formula One world. When it comes to dealing with change and working under high pressure, it's like a laboratory of fantastic insights.
The golden formula involves five elements. Four of the five elements she took from this research.
