What tomorrow brings, no one knows. Is it still possible to develop a strategy in an unpredictable world? The business environment is becoming more turbulent and the usefulness of strategic planning seems to be diminishing. Yet it appears that successful organizations are still planning, acting strategically and not just for the short term. In fact, despite the unpredictable world, they are looking further ahead. Today in the Work Professor Podcast we speak to Ard-Pieter de Man. He wrote the book "End of Strategy!?". According to him, there is no end of strategy, but what is emerging is a new form: agile strategy.
Ard-Pieter de Man has over ten years of consulting experience, combined with an academic career, the interface of theory and practice is his playing field. Translating new research into practical advice and investigating new themes at play in organizations is an absolute necessity to provide answers to the issues facing modern organizations.
Our guest today deals with strategy, innovation and organizational structuring, but most of his work has been in the area of alliances and partnerships. Partnerships between organizations are the organizational form of the future. He has helped several for-profit and nonprofit organizations set them up. In the end, something has to stand that works in practice. Besides being an independent management consultant, Ard-Pieter is Professor of Management Studies in particular Consulting, Knowledge Networks and Innovation at VU University Amsterdam. Combined with practical experience, this led to more than ten books and dozens of articles, which have also been appreciated in practice. They have been awarded the ROA prize and the OOA prize.
Turbulent times
According to Ard-Pieter de Man, it is precisely in a turbulent world that you have to look ahead. We often have the tendency in times of turbulence to think that everything has to be short-term. "We actually see that organizations that deal successfully with turbulence actually set long-term goals. We call that purpose. A bit of a buzzword these days. An objective for the long term, the question is then how are you going to get there?".
It is important to chart this well. This is how you give direction to your organization and to the people within your organization. That way, you will always get close to that purpose.
Wondering what exactly an agile strategy is? And how to arrive at an agile strategy? Then listen to the latest episode of the Work Professor Podcast. Ard- Pieter takes you through it!
