The world is changing by the day partly due to the developments within Artificial Intelligence. In some areas AI already has many applications think about analyzing moles for cancer signals and in other areas there are great opportunities but little effective deployment yet, think about self-driving cars. The difficulty there is the unexpected things like a suddenly crossing child. We speak today with senior researcher at TNO Judith Dijk about the opportunities and challenges that AI will bring.

Judith Dijk specializes in extracting information from camera images. What the physicist obtained her PhD on 18 years ago, she now applies as a research scientist at TNO, including in a research program on camera systems for defense.

Apply Research Artificial Intelligence

For the Appl.AI research program, Judith Dijk is looking at the application of AI in different domains such as healthcare, defense and security and ICT. In the research program, there are two program lines:

  1. Autonomous system in an open world

Think self-driving cars.

  1. Responsible decision-making between humans and machines

How can we make a system that helps one make decisions, but in such a way that it is done fairly and transparently. So that one can also still see what the decision is based on and there is not an unwanted bias in the final decision.

Learning from limited data sets
With relatively little data, yet building a learning system. How do we do that and can it be done at all? "Do you have enough data and do you have enough annotations? You need thousands of data to train something," Judith said. Still, she sees opportunities in her research. There are lots of datasets on the Internet. But to what extent can you use them? Suppose you are looking for an example of a comparison between peaches and oranges, but you find a study between apples and pears. Do you adapt your problem or do you teach the trained system the new example? TNO is working on this research, among others.

Wondering how you can apply AI in business? Then listen to the latest episode of the Work Professor.

Our Podcast host: Wendy van Ierschot

We know so much about human behaviour, but we hardly use this knowledge in our work. This is a missed opportunity. In De Werkprofessor, made by BNR & Wendy van Ierschot, recent scientific research into human behaviour is discussed in a lively dialogue with the expert & an entrepreneur.
