Unraveling the art of a High Performance Organization, using 7 flavors that every top chef uses, that's an original premise and as a culinary enthusiast, inspiring for me as well. In the book Leiderschap Met Smaak, Tjeerd den Boer and Niels van Rees go into conversation with the tastemakers of De Librije. They unravel the thoughts and experiences of Jonnie and Thérèse Boer using the seven Librije flavors: sweet (success), sour (setbacks), salty (mistakes), bitter (conflicts), umami (change), fat (strategy) and 3D (hospitality). Those flavors are a metaphor for the behaviors that lead to success.
Our guest today is Tjeerd den Boer. Tjeerd has been providing training in communication and leadership to the management and employees of De Librije and many other companies for years. For years people have been asking Jonnie to write a book about your success. Jonnie then said, I'm really not going to do that, you should do that Tjeerd, because you understand that better than me. So there was a book about leadership based on the 7 Librije flavors. We want to know more about that.
High Performance Organization
A boy from Giethoorn and a girl from Steenwijk set up a three-star restaurant from scratch. If you can build that and also maintain it for 18 years, because that's totally clever, then with the help of this book anyone can do it according to Tjeerd. The book should help to establish a High Performance Organization for anyone who likes it.
Before Tjeerd came to work for the Librije, he was already visiting Jonnie at home. "On the day when the Librije got its third star, Jonnie said to me, 'Tjeerd I have a problem.' I say, 'Why, you just got three stars.' Jonnie: 'You get a star in the kitchen, but you keep them with leadership. Now you have to come and help.' That was 18 years ago and we've been talking weekly about the Librije's leadership model ever since.
Often entrepreneurs have no idea what exactly their leadership model is. So did Jonnie and Thérèse. The conversation about management skills just never got going. Until Jonnie's book, Puurst which was about the 7 flavors, came out. "He was talking about that so enthusiastically, it was really about his passion. At the bitter chapter, I asked how about leading people. Then he said 'don't break my mouth.' Through the taste metaphor we got into a conversation about leadership and that's how we laid out the chapter structure. They think in flavor and that allowed them to tell the story."
