Since Corona, more and more people work at home. There were prejudices such as: don't people work at home? And do they start at 9 o'clock? Meanwhile, several studies have been conducted, such as: what type of employee actually benefits from working at home? And can you just let everyone work at home three or four days a week? How does working from home influence the hierarchical structure and how do you keep sharing knowledge as good as it used to be in the corridor?

Katlijn Haesebrouck is a lecturer in Accounting & Information Management at Maastricht University, School of Business and Economics. Katlijn's expertise is Management Accounting and Control based on the experimental method.

Research

In Katlijn's study, she focused on two character traits. In both groups, they looked at where productivity was higher. At the office or at home?

The first group to be examined were people who are very diligent and dedicated to their work. In their case, there was no difference in productivity. They were just as happy coming to the office as they were working at home.

Where Katlijn did see a difference is with the second group. This consisted of people who, by nature, are not always that honest. Here she saw that this group of people prefer to work at home. And that can have an impact on how they do their work.

Distribution

In general, Katlijn sees that people prefer to go to the office for three days and work at home for two. Tasks such as brainstorming, coaching, teamwork, sharing knowledge and receiving new tasks are best performed at work. But when employees need to focus or have routine tasks to do, they prefer to work at home.

In the podcast Katlijn takes you further into her research. Curious what else she has to say? Listen to the latest episode!
