At the European level, money is being invested in sustainable innovations, but the business case often remains a challenge. Last weekend, I had dinner with a couple of entrepreneurs. One of them, owner of a large company in internal transport systems, told me that the will is there but the business case is often not. Europe has made EUR 95.5 billion available for the Netherlands for the sustainable transition until 2027. How can we, as entrepreneurs or entrepreneurial professionals, best use this? That is what we are talking about today with CFOs Rolf Schudde and Maurik Jehee.
Both Rolf and Maurik are part-time Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) at Greyt, a service provider for interim CFOs and controllers. Both are fully engaged in investing in sustainable developments. Whereas Rolf is particularly knowledgeable about the legislation surrounding investing in sustainability, Maurik has gained his knowledge mainly from practice. Together they complement each other and are a strong duo.
Why is 95 billion not enough
"It is often very difficult to make your business case clear to funders," Maurik explains. People often underestimate the difference between developing an idea and putting it on paper and the actual investments needed to make that plan a reality. "You can have the idea, that's one, in addition you have to draw up a business plan that's ten and funding is 100, but realizing your business plan is maybe 1000. There is so much difference between being able to come up with the technology and executing it." In this regard, what is the most important lesson for the (start-up) entrepreneur? Rolf and Maurik answer and share their tips.
The problem is anything but innovation
Today, we have to deal with new business models, new markets, legal obstacles, stakeholders' demands and much more. What goes wrong with certain forms of financing? What is needed from major parties like the government? and what can business do to contribute? You'll hear about it in this episode of the Work Professor.
