Do you think your organization's HR department is doing a useful job? Are they doing the right things or are they just throwing around trendy terms? In this podcast it is made clear: this is what an HR department should be doing.
Founder and director of the HR Trend Institute Tom Haak is considered one of the 'Thought leaders' in the field of HR. He joins the Work Professor to share his views on the HR profession. As far as he is concerned, there are three key issues for an HR department.
Keep it simple
Tom shares an important first rule of thumb: keep it simple. "Don't make a rule or a procedure for everything, take a few principles and with that give people the freedom to make choices." This may cause everything to not always be fair, but that's something Tom says we shouldn't let it stop us too much.
Selecting well is crucial
"Just hire the right people" says Tom Haak, but he too recognizes that this may be a bit easily spoken. The starting point his advice focuses on the way you select. He wants to pass along that as an entrepreneur you have to think carefully about your recruitment methods. It has been proven several times that the selection interview is by far the most reliable and effective selection method. In the podcast he makes suggestions for a better procedure.
Deploy technology smartly
Finally, Tom offers a tip on how to make the processes you have smart. "There is a lot of smart technology available that can help you work smarter and faster." Editor's tip, check out HR Tech Community for suggestions.
