Suppose your employee does a good job, but does exactly what he wants and behaves quite antisocially. He asks for many favors and you keep giving in. How do you get out of this? We live in a time when authority is no longer taken for granted and power no longer works. In a polarizing society, you also get to manage difficult situations in the workplace. Our guest today is Quorry Schipshuis - Sax van der Weijden. She wrote the book "Connecting Authority for Executives - From Power to Authority."
Quorry Schiphuis-Sax van der Weijden is an educator, trainer and coach of managers, judges, inspectors and other authority figures. She is involved in international collaborations on Connecting Authority.
Breaking Patterns
The first thing that is important, according to Schiphuis, is the realization that any executive
can get caught up in a negative interaction pattern and also that it is possible to step out of this
vicious cycle by reacting differently themselves. "There are many executives who
but go on and on, they step over their intuitive gut," he said. It starts with "something
isn't right. Once you recognize that, then the question is, "What's happening? What is this employee doing? How
am I reacting?" The answer lies in the five pillars of connecting authority, a method
based on the principles of nonviolent resistance.
Binding authority
Binding authority is a form of authority that implies responsibility rather than
power and is tailored to the full range of situations that leaders
may face. It was originally developed for authority figures in
youth care (parents, group leader, teachers ed). Schiphuis has translated this approach
to the work of executives.
