Two years ago, Marijke Spanjersberg was our guest. In that episode, we looked with her at "Why you should always look at the bigger picture when facing problems. Three tips emerged here. Namely: 1. It's not personal, it's the system; when problems arise, don't just look at someone's competencies but always look at the context; 2. There are no individual problems, problems are always attached to people; 3. Try to listen to the desire behind the reproach.
The world has not stood still since then, two years ago. What has changed? And what new insights are there? Marijke has a PhD, is an organizational consultant and in our country one of the most renowned helpers in stalled collaborations at the highest level. Now Marijke wrote the book: Intermediate Language. A critical reflection on the use of psychologizing language where our deep belief that problems lie in the individual himself. Today we are going to talk about the space for in-between language.
Interlanguage
Interlanguageis best explained as the opposite of "in human language. According to Marijke, we speak in human language all day long. "We find it very common to ask 'How are you, how are you feeling, where is your resistance.' We answer that very easily."
Compared to the past, there are also many changes. A high school today advertises as "become yourself" instead of "get a degree. And where you used to be called department head, today you are called ambition manager.
Language is turning further and further inward, and there is a lot to be said about that, according to Marijke.
Important
Why is it important to see what happens between people? "Because we overlook a whole lot if we just talk in human language. We put quite a burden on the individual by doing that. Who has to work in and on himself, be self-reflective, and that is ultimately a finite repertoire. With that in human language, we put a lot of responsibility on the individual and overlook the fact that relationships are a very important factor in how people behave and also have a lot of intervention repertoire."
Wondering if you don't talk in human language but talk between people? How do we actually talk then? What language are we talking about then? Then listen to the latest episode of the Work Professor Podcast.
