"In the long term I am extremely positive about the world we are going to end up in" says Ruud Veltenaar. The only question is whether we ourselves will take the lead in creating that world or whether that new world will be directed for us by nature and piling up crises. How you as a leader can be at the helm of the new world, and prevent people from standing in front of your company with pitchforks, you'll hear in this podcast.
A leader with character
Trendwatcher, philosopher and lecturer in strategic leadership at Nyenrode University Ruud Veltenaar speaks about leadership with character. Coincidentally, he published (in collaboration with Leen Zevenbergen) his new book 'once upon a future' four days before Mark Rutte announced the intelligent lockdown. We did not then know the corona crisis in that form, but the book describes a transition from the world as we knew it to a new world. Crises and leadership are an important part of that transition.
In this podcast, Wendy van Ierschot, podcast creator for BNR, entrepreneur (VIE People) and investor (VIE Tech Capital) seeks the answer to the question: how do you show leadership with character and pass the test of the future.
The crises are piling up
The technological revolution, the sustainability of our businesses and society, and globalization are forces beyond our control. Those forces, which are steering us toward a new world, are bigger than you and you will never be at the helm. On the other hand, there are crises that we do control: the ecological crisis, the socioeconomic crisis and spiritual crisis. There is an opportunity just now in times of crisis for leaders of character not to steer back to old behavior, but to look forward. For example, by looking at the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations as a leader, you can work on the future. Ruud Veltenaar explains in the podcast what these crises mean and how to take responsibility for them as a leader. Only by taking responsibility can you prevent people with pitchforks from standing at your doorstep.
Although the crises are piling up, Ruud Veltenaar remains optimistic about the long term. He has faith in us. You can hear why that is in the podcast, which you can listen to on your favorite podcast platform. Check out the show notes below for more background. Questions or input for the podcast?
