People who sleep poorly will know; it affects your whole life. Yet we still talk little about it in the workplace. Maybe you ask your colleagues: "did you sleep well last night?", yet within the rules of the law we can discuss it more and you as an employer can better support your employees. The result: healthy and productive employees.
Dr. Els van der Helm did research at Harvard University on sleep and received her doctorate from the University of California - Berkeley on this topic. Several years ago, she set up a digital sleep coach with her company Shleep, because she believes that business is the right place to address this issue. She explains how that works in this episode of the Work Professor.
This is how you sleep better
"You have the group that is already very concerned with sleep and the group that is not at all concerned with it yet" explains Els. Both groups have their own challenges. Are you not sleeping enough? Then listen to this podcast to understand the importance of sleep. Do you have problems with sleep? Then you do know it's important, then listen to the podcast to hear how to get the prerequisites for good sleep in order.
Sleep in the workplace
Why this is a topic for the workplace? "You really only hear this question in Europe, because here employers are not directly responsible for employee health costs," yet according to Els, that is a fallacy. Here, too, we as employers benefit from our employees being healthy and happy. So it is precisely in the workplace that we can make our employees aware of the importance of sleep and help them do so.
