The world is changing at an increasingly rapid pace. Innovating seems to be a must. Innovating and adapting our services and products is necessary to remain competitive. We don't seem to be very successful at it. Why it fails so often and what the seven keys are with which you can innovate successfully, I, Wendy van Ierschot, discuss today with Joachim de Vos, Professor of Scenario Planning at the University of Ghent.
Prof. Joachim De Vos is a well-known entrepreneur, strategic advisor, author and keynote speaker. Through Living Tomorrow - the House of the Future - and TomorrowLab, he has unparalleled insight into the changing future, the impact of the technological revolution on just about every sector and the consumer response to it.
Where does it go wrong?
Let's start at the beginning. Where to start when it comes to innovating. Joachim explains that the first question you need to ask is "where do you go wrong?" before you know where to start. The author has been researching large companies for over 13 years with innovation, the process and the outcomes of it. What is causing it to go wrong? "There are many causes that cause innovation to fail. But the top three problems people have are the following. It just takes way too long to get from an idea to releasing to the market. The second is the ecosystem that has been added in recent years. The ecosystem means that you can't innovate alone anymore, you need others. You don't have all the wisdom, you need to collaborate with strategic partners. Just find the right person in the right place. The third cause is go to market. This is actually the business model. How am I going to make money? You can have a fantastically good idea, you can try to market it and get a lot of publicity, but that doesn't immediately mean it's going to be a success. That's where you have to start when you really want to innovate successfully."
The 7 keys
By now we know where to start innovating to make it a success. But in addition to a successful start, Joachim outlined the 7 keys to success in his book.
- Tech lenses on the future
- Is your organization future fit
- Structure innovation
- A winning innovation team
- Three horizons to your future
