"Can you as an individual entrepreneur stand up to a company that has a hundred billion in the bank?" International platform expert and author of the book 'Platform Revolution' Martijn Arets thinks so, if you know how to organize it from the market. Dealing smartly with platforms and seeing opportunities is essential.
When does a platform work? Martijn talks about that in this podcast as follows: "both on the demand and supply side, a lot of parties have to be active." So as an entrepreneur, it may be smart to start thinking about whether there is already a platform active in your industry, and whether the market meets the conditions Martijn states. If a platform is already active, even then you will have to do something with it.
Make the platform work for you
Of course, as an entrepreneur, you don't want to miss the boat. A platform in your industry offers opportunities and provides a lot of extra promotion. Still, it is important to determine a strategy before you start using a platform. What is the added value for you? Can you use the platform selectively so that a follow-up purchase, for example, does not have to go through the platform? Continually ask yourself the question, "when does the platform work for you and when do you bring it to yourself?" according to Arets.
Don't let your head hang
Martijn gives plenty of tips and examples of how businesses can work with platforms. Yet he makes another appeal: don't feel too small as an entrepreneur, local alternative have a lot of chances to succeed. A big platform has to fight just as hard for a local market as a local alternative.
