The labor market tightness just doesn't seem to be ending. Whereas in 2019, before the outbreak of the corona pandemic, the ratio was still around 67 vacancies per 100 unemployed, in the third quarter of 2023 there were still 114 vacancies open per 100 unemployed.

This week's Work Professor podcast features Aaltje Vincent as a guest. Aaltje is the author of 12 leading books on applying for a job, which have sold more than 100,000 copies. As an expert on job applications, she knows the ins and outs of the interview process like no other. Her expertise extends not only to the side of the applicant, but also to employers, offering insight into how to deal with this crucial aspect of the professional world.

We will talk about clear tips for employers, what is low-hanging fruit that is still not being picked? And also: why is it so hard?

The Power of a Unique Job
The most important message according to Aaltje is that applying for a job is hope for a better life. It is important to realize this well as an employer. From the moment you realize "I need new colleagues," dwell on "how can I touch their hearts so they will engage with me about working here.

Aaltje explains that it starts at a very early stage. Think carefully about how to make sure

People often think that the job postings on the website are good enough. But everyone writes that they have the nicest team. By now, that's not enough. Your employees are your ambassadors. If they talk positively about the job and, in addition, the job description shows where you are truly unique, then you are making steps in the right direction.

Takaways

  1. Start with the people who are doing the work now. Have a conversation with them about what makes you enjoy doing this work here and that you really like working here. Pick it up from your current employees
  2. Take authentic photos with current employees and, if possible, a video. Feature what it is like to work for you and in that team.
  3. Introduce people without obligation. Invite them to the office and let them talk to the people already doing the work over a cup of coffee.
