Inspiration, a behavioral problem?

Working Professor

Ap Dijksterhuis, our working professor guest today, has been investing his entire life in knowledge about human behavior in order to apply it and thereby make the world a better place. Ap is a professor of psychology, author and one of the most influential psychologists in the Netherlands. His view is that virtually every major problem facing humanity - whether war, terrorism or global warming - is a behavioral problem.

Ap Dijksterhuis is professor of psychology, author and one of the most influential psychologists in the Netherlands. Previously he wrote Het slimme onbewuste, Op naar geluk, De merkwaardige psychologie van een wijndrinker, Wie (niet) reist is gek, Maakt geld gelukkig?, the children's book Tussen je oren, Wegwee and the novella Bart. His books have sold more than 200,000 copies.

Inspiration

Inspiration, what exactly is it? Ap distinguishes three forms of inspiration in his book. The first form is your calling. The moment in your life when you discover what you need to do. The second form is the idea or raid. This is inspiration when you get a good idea. "That can be a scientist in understanding a phenomenon, a writer who has a good idea for a book and an entrepreneur who sees a new product before him."

The third form of inspiration is the daily form of inspiration we need to carry out our plans. "A painter who paints who will find that some days are better than others. This works that way for everyone." said Ap.

Unconscious processes

"I think it's very important to realize that we are thinking unconsciously. That sounds a little crazy, but when we set an important goal, for example, an innocation that we want to follow up on, we are consciously thinking about it."

But what about the unconscious? At times when one is watching a movie, for example, our unconscious simply continues labor that is relevant to solve the problem. The more we want, the harder the unconscious works.

Our Podcast host: Wendy van Ierschot

We know so much about human behaviour, but we hardly use this knowledge in our work. This is a missed opportunity. In De Werkprofessor, made by BNR & Wendy van Ierschot, recent scientific research into human behaviour is discussed in a lively dialogue with the expert & an entrepreneur.
