Manipulation, influence and disinformation are of all times. Today it is easier and more credible than ever before. The big challenge now is: how do we distinguish real news from fake news and how can we keep control of this information society as AI makes more and more possible?
Sander Duivestein, our guest today in the Work Professor podcast, co-wrote the book "Really Fake - Playing with Reality in Times of AI, Deepfakes and the Metaverse" with Menno van Doorn and Thijs Pepping. Sander explores the impact of digital technology on people, businesses and our society.
Playing with reality
Why is it that we feel the need to play with reality and spread fakenews? According to Sander, it has everything to do with the nature of the beast. Humans are traditionally storytellers.
"I then go very far back in time. We also find murals in the caves where we used to live. That was our first way to give hands and feet to reality and also to tell stories. We have constantly used technology and media to tell ever more beautiful stories and to stay connected. Fake news is part of that."
What exactly is fakenews and why do people want to believe it? And what is the impact on companies? Wondering what Sander has to say about this? Then listen to the latest episode of the BNR Werkprofessor podcast.
