If a self-driving car in America has an accident, the self-driving car in the Netherlands can learn something from it. It doesn't work that way with people; what we learn in our lives cannot simply be transferred to someone else. Systems become more complex, what do we do with them?
Using a holistic view to unravel complex systems
Maarten Steinbuch, Professor of System and Control Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology, entrepreneur and speaker on robots and self-driving cars takes us into the world of complex systems and robotics. Wendy van Ierschot, podcast maker for BNR, entrepreneur (VIE People) and investor (VIE Tech Capital) searches in her podcast for the answer to the question: what can science, which is connected to human behaviour, bring us for inspiration and how does it give us an edge in ordinary business?
"My field of control engineering is becoming increasingly important everywhere," says Maarten Steinbuch. The systems are becoming more and more complex and entrepreneurs have to look at the whole picture. Even the lawnmower has become a self-managing system. As an entrepreneur you also have to look at how your company operates in a more complex system. Just like the lawnmower. Who are all my stakeholders and how do they interact? How do my employees get their information? The podcast gives concrete examples of how to do that.
Knowledge becomes worthless, so how do you keep adding value as a company?
Steinbuch: "In twenty years time, knowledge will be worthless; everyone will be able to get it at lightning speed. The knowledge itself is not distinguishing, but how you use it is. Knowledge is growing exponentially, but we as humans cannot keep up. How do you keep up as a company? You will learn in this podcast.
Time to refocus on your product and strategy
Much of the work will be replaced by robotics, so take advantage of that and design your business so that it can adapt to it. Ask yourself if the hardware of your product is unique, and if anyone else can copy it. Then ask yourself what the software component of your product is and see if you can redirect part of your turnover to your software. Can you make money from the services around your product, more than from the product itself?

The tips from this podcast
- Learn to think on a system level.
- Think about work that will be replaced by robotics and make use of the applications of robotics in the workplace.
- Work towards a proposition in which you can make software or service your product.
