We work harder and harder, for less and less. On that principle, historian and investigative journalist Sander Heijne wrote the book Phantom Growth with researcher Hendrik Noten. In this episode of the Work Professor: what can companies and the government do to turn the tide?
'If people work, it should pay. You should be able to live a normal life with your salary, without depending on allowances.' So says Sander Heijne. He signals that fewer and fewer people are managing to do this. 'Working Holland is in a fix, while the wealthy are becoming more and more powerful.' A worrying development, according to him.
What can you do with your business?
In the search for a solution, Heijne sees a role for companies and entrepreneurs. It's actually quite simple: 'Pay people a rate or salary that they can actually make ends meet' In his own media production company, Heijne does just that. It makes him a little more expensive than competitors, but at the same time, he sees that people like working for him and doing good work as well.
The system must be different
Of course, companies cannot do it alone. According to Heijne, the government can do more. Poorly functioning systems must be overhauled. The minimum wage must be raised, the tax system can be improved and housing must become accessible and affordable for everyone again.
